The University of Ilorin Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has again  appealed to relevant stakeholders to prevail on the Federal Government towards ensuring the immediate payment of all the withheld emoluments of its members.

This appeal was made by the secretary of the cchapter, Dr Olatunji Abdulganiyu, while addressing a special congress of the Union at the University’s Auditorium last Monday (November 28, 2022).

Dr Olatunji, who lamented the inelegant manner in which the nation’s university system is being handled, said that the serial injustice suffered by intellectual workers in Nigeria over the years is unjustifiable as he insisted that education remains a key ingredient for societal transformation.

The Union leader said that the withholding of the eight months salaries of lecturers and the half payment of their October, 2022 salaries was a serious disservice to industrial harmony and the nation’s educational system.

Dr  Olatunji insisted that there is no law that says workers should not go on strike as he pointed out that the judgment of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria also made it clear that it is unlawful to make pro-rata payment of salaries to any group of workers consisting of at least 10 members.

Speaking on the controversial IPPIS platform for the payment of salaries of lecturers, Dr Olatunji said that the platform is not only insensitive to the peculiarities of the University system but also encourages corruption.

Dr Olatunji also canvassed the prompt release of the revitalisation funds to the universities as he encouraged the government to ensure that conducive environment that would stimulate quality teaching and learning is provided in all universities across the country.
