In a bold move to rewrite the artistic narrative of Ilorin, a group of fine art practitioners in Kwara State is gearing up for a month-long art exhibition aimed at highlighting the city’s untapped creative brilliance.

Scheduled to run from December 1 to December 31 at the Mindspace Centre in Ilorin, the event, aptly named the Made in Ilorin Art Exhibition, seeks to counter the national art scene’s Lagos-centric bias and put Ilorin firmly on the map.

Speaking with journalists, Adewemimo Oloyede, the visionary behind the initiative and head of Mindspace Centre, lamented the lack of recognition for Ilorin-based artists. “The spotlight on Lagos has unfortunately overshadowed the immense talent across other parts of the country,” he explained.

“Ilorin doesn’t get its due in the art world, and we want to change that. This exhibition is about taking control of the narrative and showcasing the brilliance of Ilorin’s art community.”

A Month of Art, Culture, and Connection

The exhibition promises more than just a gallery of works; it’s designed as an immersive experience for all. The grand opening on December 1 will set the stage for a lineup of diverse activities catering to schools, social clubs, government officials, and corporate entities like the Bank of Industry. Special focus days will ensure that every segment of the community is engaged, fostering dialogue, sparking creativity, and strengthening connections between artists and the public.

Oloyede revealed that the exhibition will feature works exclusively by artists living and working in Ilorin, highlighting their ingenuity and contributions to the Nigerian art scene. Beyond showcasing art, the event will include workshops and interactive sessions aimed at inspiring young people to explore careers in the creative industry.

Building a Lasting Legacy

With aspirations to make the Made in Ilorin Art Exhibition an annual event, Oloyede envisions transforming the city into a hub for artistic talent. “This project is fueled by passion. We believe in the power of art to transform societies and foster unity. This is more than an exhibition; it’s a movement to ensure Ilorin gets the recognition it deserves while providing a space for collaboration, networking, and sustainability,” he stated.

The exhibition also has tangible benefits for the local economy. By attracting visitors from across Nigeria and beyond, it is expected to boost sectors such as hospitality, retail, and tourism. Moreover, the event will celebrate Ilorin’s cultural richness, fostering pride and strengthening the city’s sense of identity.

A Platform for Collaboration and Growth

The Made in Ilorin Art Exhibition will serve as a melting pot for artists, collectors, and industry stakeholders. By facilitating collaborations, the event aims to open doors for future projects and investments, amplifying the reach and impact of Ilorin’s art community. Oloyede hopes the initiative will redefine the perception of Ilorin in the art world and create a lasting legacy that resonates far beyond the city’s borders.

“This is an invitation to everyone passionate about art, culture, and community development. Let’s come together to celebrate Ilorin and its artists, proving that excellence knows no boundaries,” Oloyede concluded.
