Ilorin, Nigeria – In a significant step towards bolstering the educational infrastructure in Kwara State, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq inaugurated the Governing Council of the Kwara State University of Education (KWASUED) on Saturday.
The ceremony, held in Ilorin, marked the official launch of the institution’s operations, setting the foundation for its academic and administrative activities.
The newly formed 11-member Governing Council will be led by Prof. Shuaib Abdulraheem, who assumes the dual roles of Chairman and Pro-Chancellor of KWASUED.
Other distinguished council members include Mrs. Opaleke Bukola, Hajia Risikat Lawal, Mr. Rotimi Olujide, Prof. Umar Gunu, Mr. Saad Belgore, Mr. Femi Aina, Omowumi Amuda, Hajia Kubra Kazum, Prof. Ibrahim Abikan, and Pastor Afolayan Babatunde.
During his address, Governor AbdulRazaq highlighted KWASUED as a visionary response to educational demands in Kwara State. He emphasised that the university, designed to succeed the former College of Education in Ilorin, is a strategic initiative to equip Kwara and its residents for a sustainable future in education and allied fields.
“This university is a necessity, positioning Kwara for a sustainable educational future,” said Governor AbdulRazaq. “With a Governing Council comprised of capable intellectuals and administrators, I am confident you will lead a seamless transition and build a university that will serve as a model for others.”
Governor AbdulRazaq also urged the council to ensure that employment and operational costs align with the institution’s financial sustainability.
He emphasised that hiring should reflect genuine needs, based on qualifications, competence, and inclusivity, avoiding unnecessary expansion of government wage expenses. He called for KWASUED to emerge as a center of excellence, dedicated to research, academic rigour, and elevated standards.
Further solidifying the leadership framework for KWASUED, Governor AbdulRazaq appointed the Olupo of Ajase-Ipo, Oba Ismail Alebiosu, as the Chancellor of the institution.
Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr. Mary Arinde, praised the Governor for his commitment to educational development in Kwara State, describing the inauguration as a milestone in realizing the institution’s vision. She lauded Governor AbdulRazaq for his careful selection of council members, reflecting the administration’s commitment to inclusive and effective governance in education.
Prof. Abdulraheem, expressing gratitude for the Governor’s educational vision, acknowledged the significance of the council’s mandate. He underscored the importance of education as a pillar of societal growth, pledging that the council would pursue excellence to realize the Governor’s aspirations for KWASUED.
