ABUJA – President Bola Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Olori Onikepo Olufunmike Akande, OON, CON, in celebration of her 80th birthday on October 29, recognising her as a distinguished pioneer and a beacon of leadership in both Nigeria’s public and private sectors.

Olori Akande, affectionately known as Nike, made history as Nigeria’s first female Minister of Industry and later as the second female President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Reflecting on her achievements, President Tinubu highlighted her trailblazing record and her lasting contributions to Nigeria’s development, both in government and in business.

A press release by the Senior Special Assistant to the President (Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga described the celebrant as a prominent figure, who had held multiple roles, including serving on the boards of the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria (NICON) and the Nigeria Industrial Development Bank, now the Bank of Industry.

From 1992 to 1994, she was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Centre for Women Development in Abuja, where she worked to advance the welfare of Nigerian women.

President Tinubu lauded her impact in driving progress during her tenure as Minister of Industry, underscoring her commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s industrial landscape.

Educated at Harvard and renowned for her expertise in investment, Olori Akande has received numerous accolades, particularly for her advocacy in empowering women in commerce and entrepreneurship.

In addition to her professional achievements, she is celebrated as the Iyalaje Iyalode of Ibadanland, wife of Oba Adebayo Akande, the Ekaarun Olubadan of Ibadanland, and a dedicated mother and grandmother.

The President acknowledged her as a role model to countless women across Nigeria, commending her resilience, philanthropy, and dedication to uplifting others.

"Olori Akande’s life exemplifies beauty, courage, and kindness," President Tinubu said, honouring her legacy of mentorship and influence.

He also prayed for her continued health and longevity, hoping she would inspire future generations to embrace optimism and resilience.
