President Bola Tinubu has nominated Saseyi Ibiyemi as the new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ondo State and Abdulrazak Tukur as a National Commissioner for the North West, both pending Senate confirmation.

These appointments were announced on Monday as part of Tinubu’s ongoing effort to strengthen Nigeria's electoral administration.

If approved, Ibiyemi, 58, will take over as REC in Ondo, following the passing of Mr. Niyi Ijalaye, who served in Ogun State until his death in August.

Ibiyemi, an experienced administrator, currently holds the position of Administrative Secretary for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos State.

A native of Ilaje in Ondo, she graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University in 1987, was called to the bar in 1988, and later earned a Master’s degree in Election Management from Bingham University, Nasarawa State.

Abdulrazak Tukur, 59, is set to represent the North West as National Commissioner if cleared by the Senate. With a career at INEC beginning in 1999, Tukur has steadily advanced, most recently serving as the Director of Electoral Operations and Logistics until December 2023.

His academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts from Bayero University, Kano, a postgraduate diploma in Economics from Bradford University in England, and a Master of Arts from Leeds University.

The nominations, announced in a statement by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, reflect a commitment to qualified leadership within INEC as Nigeria prepares for future electoral milestones, according to him.
