Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN has called on the Federal Government to rehabilitate its own refineries and redouble efforts to improve the quality of life for Nigerians, saying the approach is key to reducing the influence of prominent businessmen like Aliko Dangote.

Agbakoba, the Senior Partner at Olisa Agbakoba Legal, critiqued the recent advice given by fellow legal expert Professor Itse Sagay, SAN.

Sagay had suggested that the government could take over the Dangote Refinery, compensate Dangote, and sell the products at more affordable prices.

Addressing this proposal in a press statement made available to the media on Tuesday Agbakoba stated, “Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN) mentioned that the constitution allows the federal government to take over the Dangote Refinery, pay him compensation, and then sell the products at prices Nigerians can afford.

“But why take over what a private individual built? Why can’t the FG fix its refineries all these years and make Dangote irrelevant?

“Why allow an efficient businessman hold you to ransom when there is a very simple alternative?”. He queried

Agbakoba emphasised the importance of the government taking responsibility for essential infrastructure and services. According to him "The simple alternative for us all is this – let Nigeria work. Let there be light. Let there be food. Let there be water. Let there be jobs. Let there be money, schools, healthcare, roads, etc.

“This is how to render Dangote irrelevant and not as suggested by taking over another man’s sweat, even if the sweat is to cheat us. Let the FG do its own refineries and bluff Dangote.”
