A professor in the Department of Mathematics, University of Ilorin, Raphael Babatunde Adeniyi has been declared missing.
A release by the family said he left home located at Tanke, Ilorin on Wednesday June 9, 2021 to withdraw money at GTBank, Tanke Junction, before noon. Since then, he has not been found.
Adeniyi is an expert in Chebyshev polynomials. This is a mathematical formula for solving polynomials and approximation functions. In the layman language, it involves the means of detecting, analysing and solving errors.
He presented his research findings on the subject at the university’s 162nd Inaugural Lecture entitled “Minimization of Error: A Necessary Condition for Accuracy, Stability and Progress.”
At the lecture, he explained that numerical analysis has found applications not only in the disciplines of Engineering and Physical Sciences, but also in the Life Sciences and the Arts, which have also adopted the elements of scientific computations.
While advocating the proper monitoring of structural buildings to forestall errors that may result to building collapse, the erudite Mathematician observed that “Nigeria is a country where the errors in our systems have led to injustice, inequity, disorderliness and sometimes outright crisis and chaos.”
According to him, “all deviations from acceptable, ideal standards and norms of any just and egalitarian society are necessarily errors. When errors are minimised in a system whether mathematical, social or political, such systems experience relative stability and progress.”
Adeniyi called for the fear of God among the citizenry, which will bring about stability, peace and progress to Nigeria. He advocated for the “minimisation of errors in the use of power, privileges, opportunities and positions.”
The don said, “We need to give greater attention to the needed systemic Chebyshev polynomials that will bring about stability, peace and progress in our nation. And what are they? They are, love for our fellow humans, tolerance and respect for human life and more importantly the fear of God.”
A senior non-teaching staff in the University, Mr Leye Ojo observed that it would be quite bad if the Professor is not immediately found. “I’m not impugning that anybody is worthless, but this is an asset that we cannot afford to lose, just like that”
The family in their release urged any one with useful information on his where about to contact the nearest Police Station or call 08065250697
