Kwara state University, KWASU Malete, has announced that seven prominent Nigerians, including the First Lady, Aishat Buhari would be conferred with special honourary degrees of the university at its combined 8th and 9th convocation, which produced 98 First Class graduates.

The ceremonies hold on Saturday, 10th December.

Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Muhammed Mustapha Akanbi, disclosed these in Ilorin on Monday, at a press conference held to herald the week-long event at the University campus in Malete.

A total of 6,620 graduands would receive certificates of the university.

According to him, 2019/2020 session has 3,864 graduates, while the 2020/2021 session has 2,756 graduating students. A total of 417 higher degrees graduates were produced for the two academic sessions.

The VC informed newsmen that a total of 87 students were expelled from the University between 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 for their involvement in examination malpractice, drug related offences, internet fraud, and robbery among other anti-social behaviours. 

He said that the Governing Council and Senate of the university, have approved the conferment of honorary degrees of the institution on seven distinguished Nigerians for their contributions to national development in various endeavours.

They include Nigeria's First Lady, Mrs Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, who received Doctor of Entrepreneurship; the Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, as Doctor of Letters; Engr Johnson Bamidele Adewumi, Chancellor, Kwara state University, Doctor of Technology and Alhaji AbdulSamad Rabiu, Doctor of Business.

Others are Alhaji Muhammadu Indimi, Doctor of Technology; Alhaji Kamoru Obitoye Yusuf, Doctor of Technology and Babatunde Jolayemi Omotowa, Doctor of Science.

Professor Akanbi, listed challenges confronting the university to include funding, bad state of the access road to Malete from Shao, encroachment on the university's land by the host communities and individuals, as well as provision of adequate security to meet the growth of population and other human activities in the community.

He requested for more security personnel to curb crime and criminality around the host community.

He sought the assistance of the state and Federal governments to increase the number of officers and men attached to the Malete Divisional Police station as well as establishment of other paramilitary security posts in the town.
