Ilorin, Kwara State– Lawyers representing Asa Investment Limited and the Saraki family have called on the Kwara State Commissioner of Police to compel the Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq-led state government to comply with a court order restraining any actions on the disputed plots of land known as Ile-Arugbo, owned by the late Abubakar Olusola Saraki.
The plea was detailed in a petition written to the Police Commissioner and signed by Barrister Abdulazeez Ayodeji Ibraheem. A copy of this petition was made available to newsmen on Tuesday.
Earlier, a Kwara State High Court in Ilorin had issued an interim order prohibiting the state government from initiating any construction on the said plots pending the final determination of the case. Justice A. O. Akinpelu granted the restraining order in a suit filed by Asa Investment, the Saraki family, and another party against Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, the Kwara State House of Assembly, the Attorney-General of Kwara State, the Director-General of the Kwara State Bureau of Lands, and the Inspector-General of Police.
In addition to this court order, the former Kwara State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Salman Jawondo, SAN, had signed an undertaking on behalf of the state government, agreeing not to engage in any activities on the land until the case was resolved.
Despite these legal constraints, the state government allegedly ordered the clearing of the disputed Ile-Arugbo land last week. The claimants' counsel subsequently petitioned the State Commissioner of Police to intervene, citing the need to uphold the court’s ruling.
The petition highlighted that agents of the state government were seen demolishing structures and buildings on the land while the lawsuit remained unresolved. The lawyers argued that the governor's actions amounted to contempt of court and called on the police to enforce compliance with the law to prevent potential unrest in Ilorin.
