A 37-year-old barman, Joseph Obiebe, on Tuesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing N1.5 million from a hotel.

The defendant, who resides on Road G, Ogombo, Ajah, Lagos State, is facing charges of conspiracy and stealing, but he pleaded not guilty.

According to the prosecutor, Insp Funmilayo Akinleye, the defendant committed the offences on July 13 on Oyekunle Street, Papa Ashafa, Agege, Lagos State.

Akinleye said that the barman could not account for N1.5 million he realised from sales for Talisco Hotel, his employer.

The prosecutor said that the complainant, Mrs Precious Ikhouria, employed the service of an auditor and discovered that N1.5 million was missing from the company’s account.

“The defendant was thereafter arrested,” she said.

According to the prosecutor, the alleged offences contravene Sections 287(7) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. O. Fajana, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Fajana adjourned the case until Sept. 30 for mention.
