The wife of Kwara governor, Dr Olufolake AbdulRazaq, and her Ajike People’s Support Centre on Thursday in Ilorin empowered more than 40 women and youths in the state with sewing machines.

Speaking at the presentation, AbdulRazaq said the fashion industry could create jobs for unemployed women and youths when properly harnessed.

She said the initiative was part of her efforts to enhance the standard of living of beneficiaries by creating employment in the face of challenges created by the COVID-19.

She stressed the importance of training, saying the development of vocational skills would go a long way in reducing unemployment among youths in the society.

In her remarks, Mrs Joanna Kolo, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, commended the governor’s wife and her centre for the gesture.

Kolo acknowleded that the initiative would go a long way in ensuring a better life for the beneficiaries and urged them to make use of the opportunity.

She called on residents of the state to support the AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq administration.

Some of the beneficiaries commended the governor’s wife for the gesture.  Miss Moyinoluwa Olorunmaiye said  “I appreciate all that she is doing to build the future of youths, especially women and young entrepreneurs. The empowerment will assist me to be more self reliant and I am really grateful for this,” she concluded.

Another beneficiary, Mapu Abubakar, said that the sewing machine would enhance her knowledge of fashion design as she had been praying for one.

Mr Samuel Keziah, on his part, thanked the governor’s wife for the gesture, noting that lack of funds had prevented him from acquiring a sewing machine.

NAN reports that the initiative was supported by the Honorary Consul of Colombia in Nigeria, Maricel Romero Cantillo, and tailored toward ensuring that citizens of Kwara, especially women and youths, were self reliant.   

That the governor’s wife had on July 16 empowered more than 30 entrepreneurs in the fashion industry.
