In a swift response to a sudden disturbance in Nigeria’s national power grid on Wednesday, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commenced repair efforts to restore stability across affected areas.

The grid disturbance occurred around 11:29 AM due to an unexpected frequency rise from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz, causing disruptions in power supply across the nation. TCN officials immediately launched recovery efforts, with power restored to the Abuja axis within minutes. Restoration is ongoing across other regions.

Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN, confirmed these developments, assuring Nigerians of the company’s dedication to power reliability and grid modernization.

According to her, the frequency spike was traced to issues at one of TCN’s substations, which was temporarily shut down to prevent further disruptions. In parallel, TCN is pressing forward with significant repair and upgrade projects at key points in the transmission network. These include essential repairs on the 330kV transmission line along the Shiroro-Mando corridor, major upgrades at the Jebba Transmission Substation, and the restoration of the second 330kV transmission line between Ugwuaji and Apir.

In addition, she said in a release, “TCN has acted on recommendations from an investigative report into previous grid collapses, identifying weaknesses in the transmission system and implementing targeted technical and strategic interventions. These measures are aimed at strengthening the grid’s stability and resilience. However, TCN cautioned that some instability in the system may persist until major repair work is complete”

Acknowledging the challenges faced by the public due to these disruptions, TCN appealed for patience and understanding, stressing its commitment to a stable and reliable power supply.

"We recognise the importance of dependable electricity for Nigeria’s socio-economic progress and are working around the clock to stabilize the grid,” the company assured in a statement.

The repair efforts also include addressing damages caused by vandalism and enhancing infrastructure to prevent future outages.

TCN reiterated that all necessary steps are being taken to secure a resilient national grid, in line with the committee’s recommendations, for long-term stability.
