In a significant development, seventy-six detained minors from Kano returned home Tuesday night, landing at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport aboard a Max Air flight.
The plane, also carrying Governor Abba Yusuf, touched down around 9:57 p.m., marking the end of a challenging period for the children and their families.
Their return followed a directive from President Bola Tinubu, who ordered their release earlier that morning. Governor Yusuf, along with key government officials—including Deputy Governor Abdul Salam Gwarzo, Speaker of the State Assembly Alhaji Isma’ila Falgore, and several commissioners—welcomed the children back, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to their well-being.
Immediately after their arrival, the minors were transported in three buses to the Muhammadu Buhari Special Hospital. There, a team of medical professionals conducted comprehensive assessments to evaluate both their physical and mental health, ensuring they received necessary care.
Governor Yusuf, speaking at the hospital, revealed that he was unaware of the minors’ arrest until they were arraigned at the Federal High Court in Abuja. “On learning of the matter, I promptly directed the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to take charge of the case,” he said. Yusuf expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for his compassionate gesture and commended the parents for their patience and maturity during the ordeal.
In a move to reintegrate the minors into society, Yusuf assured that his administration would support their education and help them build a stable future. He pledged to facilitate their return to school and provide resources for those interested in small-scale businesses.
Addressing the events leading to their arrest during the #EndBadGovernance protest, Yusuf emphasised that the minors’ actions, though unfortunate, would not define their future. “I will ensure these children receive a second chance at a normal life through access to education, rehabilitation, and personal growth,” he stated.
