In response to the reforms initiated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State has reintroduced the free transportation palliative for residents, aiming to soften the blow of rising costs.
According to a new pricing template released by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Technology, residents will now be able to travel for free on designated routes, including Post Office to Tanke, Unilorin, Oja, Eyenkorin, Amayo, Mandate, Oyun, UITH, and Okeose, among others.
Previously, fares for these routes ranged from N300 to N500, with trips from Post Office to Tanke-Unilorin priced at N500, while Oyun-UITH-Okeose cost N400 for students, staff, and the general public.
The Governor’s Senior Special Assistant, New Media, Olayinka Fafoluyi in a release said the state has a history of stepping in to assist during tough economic times. “For instance, he provided similar free transportation during the fuel scarcity and currency swap crisis under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
“Since the onset of the Tinubu-led government’s economic reforms last year, Governor Abdulrazaq has consistently offered free and subsidised transport services, helping to alleviate the pressure on citizens during these challenging times.
The initiative, he said, offers immediate relief to residents, especially those commuting daily for work, school, or business, easing the financial strain caused by fuel price hikes and inflation.
“It demonstrates the state government’s commitment to cushioning the effects of national economic reforms, maintaining public confidence in local leadership, Fafoluyi observes.
