A former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani, says during his time in the Senate, he was accused of "tarnishing the image of the Government and the North”.
Sani said that he had complained about “the paralysis of security”, but was instead persecuted.
“Every time I stood on the floor of the Senate to speak about the paralysis of security, the infamy of terrorists and bandits and the plight of our people, they accused me of tarnishing the image of their gods, the Government and our North; their pampered Bandits are now devouring everybody,” Sani wrote on his verified Twitter handle on Saturday.
Northern Nigeria region has seen a sharp rise in mass abductions and other violent crimes since late 2020 as the government struggles to maintain law and order.
Nigeria designated bandits as “terrorist” groups, allowing for tougher sanctions under the “terrorism” prevention act for suspected shooters, their informants, and supporters such as those caught supplying them with fuel and food.
President Muhammadu Buhari said the military has acquired more equipment to track down and eliminate criminal gangs, which have been subjecting people to a reign of terror, including through the illegal imposition of taxes on communities under siege.
