A Kwara-based civic group advocating for accountability and transparency in governance, Elites Network for Sustainable Development, ENetSuD has challenged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to immediately prosecute ex-governor Abdulfatah Ahmed and other members of his administration over claims they embezzled state UBEC grants.

The Coordinator, Abdullateef Alagbonsi, in a statement said Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, should take a bold step by instituting a criminal case against Ahmed, if the allegations the governor has been making are credible and valid.

Recall that Governor Abdulrazaq, alleged recently that the previous government of the PDP, under former governor Abdulfatai Ahmed, recklessly embezzled about a billion naira UBEC funds meant for basic education development of the Kwara Child in the state.

He lamented also that the education sector had collapse at the time he assumed office in the state in 2019.

However, reacting to the development, the ENetSUD Coordinator, noted "the persistent allegation by governor Abdulrazaq since 2019, that the past administration stole the UBEC grant is weighty and criminal in nature and should not end on social media or pages of newspapers."

The civil society group, reminded the governor of his constitutional duty to abolish all corrupt practices and abuse of power in line with Section 15(5) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The coordinator, urged the governor not to further waste any time over the criminal allegations of embezzlement of public funds and immediately direct the Attorney General of the state, to prosecute the alleged stealing of public funds.

The group, said the governor should initiate prosecution against all those members of the immediate past administration involved in the alleged stealing of the UBEC grants in order not to see the statement of the governor as mere allegation.

ENetSUD, advised that prosecution of the alleged looters in the public interest, will serve the public and taxpayers better than perpetual allegations in the media, without any action to recover such funds, especially now that they have no immunity stopping them from being prosecuted.
