The historic town of Offa, in Kwara State is set to come alive with cultural vibrancy as the annual Ijakadi Festival returns from December 26 to December 28, 2024.

This year’s festival theme, “Cultural and Creative Sectors: Vehicle for Economic Growth and Development,” reflects the community’s commitment to promoting culture as a driver of economic progress and development.

The festival opens on December 26 with an interfaith prayer session led by prominent religious leaders, including the Chief Imam of Offa, Sheikh Muideen Abdulsallam, and the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Offa.

Following the prayers, Dr. Lawal M. Muhammed will deliver the annual lecture, “Evolution of Our Offa Compound Names as a Way of Approaching and Promoting Our Cultural Heritage,” at the Offa Palace, aimed at rekindling pride in local heritage.

The day will continue with performances of traditional cultural displays such as “Rara sisun” and “Omosunwo,” setting the stage for an immersive experience in Offa’s rich cultural traditions.

On December 27, the spotlight turns to a Traditional Expo that will showcase Offa’s traditional attire, drumming, and hairdo styles.

In the evening, the palace will host a beauty pageant to honour the elegance and grace of local culture, followed by a grand musical concert at ODU open ground, running from 9:00 p.m. until dawn.

The festival culminates on December 28 with a grand display of Offa’s rich heritage at the Offa Township Stadium.

The highly anticipated symbolic wrestling demonstration by the Kabiyesi and the “Onilejile” cultural display will highlight the day’s events.

Festivities will conclude with a grand Royal Dinner at the Kabiyesi’s Palace, bringing the community together in celebration and solidarity.

The 2024 Ijakadi Festival, according to the organisers promises to be a powerful fusion of cultural pride and economic engagement, drawing attention to Offa as a center of tradition and opportunity.

Dr. Waheed Olagunju, Chairman of the Media and Communications Committee for the festival said “This year’s festival will not only celebrate our heritage but also emphasise the role of culture in driving growth and development, making it an event not to be missed.”
