In a bid to combat rising criminal activities, the Kwara State Police Command showcased 28 suspected criminals, consisting of 18 alleged kidnappers, three armed robbery suspects, two individuals suspected of engaging in money rituals and other suspected criminals
During a press briefing held at the police headquarters in Ilorin on Thursday, the state Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, revealed that since October 2023, a total of 78 kidnap suspects have been apprehended and are currently held in various correctional facilities across the state.
“We’re worried, and that’s why we have been taking steps to ensure we keep them there.
“Some of the kingpins even have a larger-than-life attitude that nothing can happen to them and that they’ll be released when arrested.”
Expressing concern over the surge in kidnapping incidents, Commissioner Olaiya affirmed the unwavering commitment of law enforcement to eradicate such crimes from the state. He emphasised the need for continuous efforts in combating drug-related offenses, citing them as a significant contributing factor to violent crimes.
“Criminals don’t do things with clear eyes. Drugs constitute one of the biggest problems we need to contend with. We need to keep drugs out of circulation as much as possible”, he said.
Acknowledging the challenges hindering the swift prosecution of criminal suspects, Victor Olaiya highlighted the reluctance of victims to testify in court due to safety concerns. He stressed the importance of providing rehabilitation opportunities for individuals willing to reform, in collaboration with government initiatives.
Among the items confiscated from the apprehended suspects were N6.4 million in cash, seven mobile phones, and two wristwatches. Additionally, the police disclosed the arrest of nine more suspected kidnappers, three armed robbery suspects, and two individuals accused of possessing human body parts for ritual purposes.
