At least four persons, late night on Monday were reported dead while others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a road accident that occurred on the main campus of the University of Ilorin.

The accident, it was gathered, occurred at about 10pm when a Suzuki Mini bus conveying commuters out of the campus was rammed on by a car driven by a youth.

The bus driver, a source told midlandpost, had his wife, identified as Shakirat and a staff of the university on the bus. The couple and two others died on the spot.

Another unconfirmed report said the fifth injured person involved in the accident died on Tuesday, raising the death toll to five.

The management of the University of Ilorin in a statement on Tuesday by its spokesman, Kunle Akogun, said it received with sadness news of the unfortunate auto accident that occurred on campus on Monday evening.

According to him, “The said accident resulted in some fatalities while some occupants of the cars involved also sustained varying degrees of injuries.

“We commiserate with the parents of the deceased and beseech Almighty God to comfort them in this trying period.

“We also condole the entire student body of the University on the sad loss of their colleagues.

“Management also wishes the injured quick and total recovery,” the statement added.

The management of the institution enjoined all vehicle users to strictly abide by traffic rules and regulations, especially as they concern speed limits.
