He writes on his Facebook page: Which of These Days Will Yo Enjoy Most?...Public fighting day? World enemy killing day?

If it is true that demons and the devil prey on the souls of the living, then the scary story of Waliu Salaudeen, the student of University of Ilorin, who attempted to snuff life out of a female lecturer in the daytime last week would effectively prove that an encounter with true evil could actually happen.

While the university community tries to put the ugly incident behind it, as the Vice Chancellor, Professor Sulyman Age Abdulkareem had assured staff and students of adequate security and more vigilance on the students, including justice for the victim, it is doubtful if the university’s lecturers would recover soon from the shock inflicted by Captain Walz, as he is called, more so when it dawned on everyone that his action was buoyed up by seeming symptoms of psychosis.

During interrogation by the university’s security unit, he revealed how he had carried hallucinated feelings on his head about Mrs Rahmat Zakariyyah, the department’s SIWES Coordinator and his Level Adviser (LA), two individuals he perceived were behind his academic misfortune and was ready to do something about it.

It was not until mid-noon on Thursday last week when the devil took hold of him. He went berserk in Zakariyyah’s office pummeling and dragging her. When the lecturer found temporary escape from her assailant and tried to run for safety, he caught up with her and knocked her into coma and attempted to strangle her. But for timely rescue by the university’s security personnel, the university would have had different story to tell about Mrs Zakariyyah.

Prior to the time, Waliu told the university’s Union of Campus Journalists, UCJ in an interview that he had gone after his Level Adviser (LA) with the intents of "teaching him a lesson. He blamed his actions on a dream where he saw his LA plotting against him along with Mrs Zakariyau and other people. "1 was actually looking for my LA to challenge him and ask what he was plotting against me."

In the interview, Waliu narrated how he made several entreaties to Mrs Zakariyyah to help him waive the mandatory SIWES course which he couldn’t do due to unforeseen circumstances. He explained that he was a victim of trump-up charge and had spent two months behind bars in Lagos, at a time he was to be on the SIWES assignment. “Thursday was the day I had a lot on my mind and I went to her again”. He told UCJ.

But the university’s student union at the weekend hinted on drug-use by Waliu, cautioning others to stay away from the sickening part. The Secretary, Adeleye lsaac, while also speaking with the UCJ said "the guy must have acted under the influence of drug which the administration totally condemns”

A further check on Waliu however revealed that he had actually exhibited symptoms of psychosis, a mental disorder that causes hallucinations as back as 2017. That year, he raised a poser on his Facebook page with the hashtag #DontforgetToCheckPage#CaptainWalz. He wrote: Which of These Days Will Yo Enjoy Most??

Among the options he gave were: Public weed smoking day; Naked street working day; Free beer drinking day; Free shopping day; Public fighting day; World free food day; Free matric Certificates day and World enemy killing day. There are others among his options.

It is doubtful if Waliu had not carried his last option on his head to the hours of going after his perceived enemy, Mrs Zakariyyah and others.

Psychosis may occur as a result of a psychiatric illness such as schizophrenia. In other instances, it may be caused by a health condition, medication or drug use, a doctor, Adeyemi Adelusi explained

Captain Walz was a popular student on campus. Besides being a student, he is a budding music act with great potential given his thrilling performances at musical shows and the number of his releases online. He goes by the stage name Capttain Walz O Serious. He once stole the show at the local Roots of Creation - RoC Live concert where he went home with prize-money.

There are indications that the university authorities will wield the big stick given the pall of fear Waliu has cast on the university environment. Various groups within and out of the campus have condemned the incident and demanding justice, which the Vice Chancellor had promised would be served.
