The lone member of the opposition party in the Kwara State House of Assembly, Jimoh Agboola of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been suspended for alleged contempt and abuse of privilege.
Agboola is the lawmaker representing Ilorin South Constituency..
His suspension follows a motion without notice moved by the House Leader, Abubakar Olawoyin, during the Tuesday plenary.
While leading the debate on the motion, the House Leader said the Assembly is an institution and not an individual and as such must be respected.
Olawoyin accused Agboola of making a disparaging comment about the House, saying that he called on the masses to stage a protest against the government and the House of Assembly on a radio programme.
He argued that such acts at this period of insecurity as unsafe and could lead to chaos.
He described how Agboola disrespected the House as already trending on social media and urged the Speaker to direct investigation into the matter.
A lawmaker representing Isin state constituency, Olumide Awolola Ayokunle said, derogatory language against the House should not be condoned especially when such language is found out to be false.
He urged the House to make proper investigation on the matter before any action could be taken. Speaker Yakubu Salihu Danladi assured the House of adequate investigation and directed the House Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Judiciary to conduct an investigation on the matter and reports its finding to the House as soon as possible.
He also directed Agboola to seize from attending plenary pending the conclusion of the investigation.
In reaction to his suspension, the lawmaker said that the suspension would not stand the test of time, adding that he would make his next line of action known soon.

The presiding judge in the case of University of Ilorin raped and murdered student, Justice Ibrahim Yusuf has ordered the arrest of a defence counsel to one of the accused persons, Mr Sikiru Solagberu, for alleged indiscipline. Solagberu is the counsel to the seventh defendant (Daud Bashir Adebayo), who is charged with aiding, abetting and receiving stolen items.
The lawyer had through his secretary, Yemisi Ademola served the court his notice withdraw from the case with a letter delivered to the court on Wednesday.
But Justice Ibrahim Yusuf had frowned at the comments of the counsel in his interview to journalists after Tuesday’s sitting, saying that his comments were a sign of indiscipline.
He therefore issued a bench warrant for his arrest. Barr. Solagberu had while reacting to the court's rejection of the bail application of his client said, “The constitution gives room for suspects even if capital offence to be granted bail and thus it isn’t novel.
“However, because of sentiments attached to the case, usually people would not want to hear you filing an application for bail.”
The murder of Blessing Olajide, a 300-level student of the University of Ilorin, who was brutally raped and killed in her apartment a couple of weeks ago has generated outcry, with the presiding judge assuring of accelerated trial.
The case has been adjourned till Monday, July 12, 2021, for the continuation of the hearing.
The Kwara Ministry of Environment and Forestry says waste management trucks will be deployed to the streets for waste collection on June 26, during its scheduled monthly sanitation.
